The Man in the Woods

I woke up this morning in a dense forest. I found this to be quite odd, as I had gone to sleep in my bed last night. Something was very wrong here. I stood and tried to get my bearings. I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. My pockets were empty and I was barefoot. I began to walk toward the rising sun as the trees began to thin in that direction. I spied the most amazing thing from the edge of the woods. Everyone was dressed in slacks and long dresses. All of them appeared to be moving toward small church building. Now, when I get up I like to eat so I went to the closest corn field and helped myself. While all those suckers were in church I proceeded to help myself to some butter and bread from the closest house. I poked around the house for a while and found all these religious books and some half written sermons. This had to be the house of a reverend. I rummaged throughout the house looking for money and valuables. I figure I got to eat sometime again and I can’t just steal corn all the time. When I finished I came up with some weird looking money some shoes and a jacket. Also I’d made a huge mess in the house and not wanting to wait for the reverend to return I left.
That night I curled up to a tree and fell asleep. Suddenly I was woken by the noises of several young girls dancing in my forest. They were dancing around a pot of water, when suddenly one of them took off her clothes. Not wanting to spoil this situation I kept still. The nude girl took a chicken and in one smooth motion killed it and drank it’s blood. I marched over there to find what was wrong with these girls. Soon as I got near them they saw men and ran off.
The next day I went into town to buy some food from a farmer. I ask him for some food and he acted as if I wasn’t even there. In fact he never responded to me at all. I went to another farmer only to be treated in the same fashion. He spoke to his wife of the reverend’s daughter coming down sick after being caught dancing in the woods. I stood right next to the man as he said this and never did he or his wife even pay any attention to me. This being quite odd I left to ponder what had occurred in the woods.
I figured that the only people that were able to see me in the town were the girls so I decided to go find them. Having collected my thoughts I returned to find the entire town in a meeting. I slipped in the back of the meeting to find it not a meeting but a trial. The reverend was on the stand accusing a mister John Hamshire of sending his spirit out to loot the reverend’s house on Sunday. The reverend saw the man in church. On arriving home the reverend found his home torn through and a ear corn from Hampshire’s fields in his home. Hampshire took the stand to defend himself. Feeling guilty I stepped forward to explain my case. Before I could explain what happened the group of girls began screaming and pointing at me. They said they saw the devil and that he came just as Hampshire took the stand. People began to yell out prayers, so I ran to the woods.
The next morning I woke filled with questions. I went to the reverends home to over hear his conversation. He spoke of the tragedy of the day before. How Hampshire was hanged for witchcraft. The court said that he had sent his spirit to loot the reverends home and the devil had appeared during the trial when Hampshire took the stand. I became frightened of what I had done. I when into the woods and lived out my life. I listened to the townspeople speak of the mysterious black man that lived in the woods ready to turn you from the ways of God.
