Huck’s character comes from a few incidents. Such as his time with
Miss Watson ands the Widow Douglas. These two taught him to read and all
the historical facts that he would later confuse horribly. Tom Sawyer
is also one of the biggest influences on Huck. Huck throughout the novel
always thinks of what Tom would do in his situation. Huck envied Tom’s
fancy book smarts. This is ironic because Huck’s common sense proved
much better than Tom’s knowledge of adventure stories. This proved
true when it came time to free Jim. Huck came up with such a better plan
than tom’s four week long over planned adventure.
Huck also changes his attitude toward slavery during the course of the
novel. Toward the beginning he almost turns Jim in to slave hunters. During
the story he hears of how Jim cared for his daughter and wife. Huck feels
comfortable with Jim as a friend. By the end of the story he spends four
weeks trying to get Jim out of the Phelps’ ranch.
Huck does have his share of bad qualities mixed in with his good nature.
He isn’t opposed to stealing when he doesn’t have Tom around
to remind him not to. Such as the beginning of the novel in witch Tom
makes Huck leave a nickel for the candle he took. Later in the story Huck
would take food from farms with Jim’s help. His good qualities include
quick thinking and being able to tell white lies on the spot. Such as
making up the George Jackson name and later pretending to be Tom Sawyer.
The environment Tom lived in made very little difference to Huck. He spent
time in a stuffy house at the beginning. Then he floated down the Mississippi
without a care in the world for a long time with Jim. He lived in elegance
with the Grangefords and none of these changes affected Huck at all.
